Paper Bag Day is celebrated around the world on July 12. The purpose of celebrating this day is to spread awareness about using paper bags instead of plastic to help reduce plastic waste. Paper bags are an environmentally friendly alternative that can be used instead of harmful plastic bags.
Plastics take thousands of years to decompose and are also very harmful to living organisms. Plastic waste is accumulating in the sea, killing fish. It has often been warned by scientists that by the year 2050, the same amount of plastic waste will accumulate in the oceans as fish.
Today the whole world is troubled by plastic pollution. This is why the importance of this day increases. These days most people try to stop the use of plastic by exchanging items only through paper bags. On this day people are made aware to avoid the use of plastic bags.
The first paper bag machine was patented in 1852 by Francis Walley of the United States. 'Mother of the Grocery Bag' Margaret E. Knight created a square, flat bottom bag in 1870 and built a machine to make this type of bag. Since then, there have been demonstrations around the world demanding a ban on plastics, and people have realized the importance of this.
Now many people have started using paper bags instead of plastic. Which can be reused as well as recycled. It is biodegradable, can carry relatively high weight and is also easy to maintain.
