Known as the Father of Emoji, Shigetaka Kurita has neither studied engineering nor was he a designer. Shigetaka, who studied economics, designed the emoji for a mobile internet service company. Back then the number of characters to send an email was only 250. That's when Kurita realized that emojis would be the best way to express herself in a few words. That's why emojis were used instead of words in emails.
Shigetaka created the first set of emojis with ideas like pictures of the atmosphere, light bulbs and tickling bombs from comic books, etc., which also included emojis depicting laughter, sadness, anger, surprise and confusion. Seeing the growing popularity of emojis in Japan, the iPhone incorporated an emoji-keyboard into its mobile phones. Gradually it was used in SMS and chatting.
Added emoji word to Oxford Dictionary
The word was added to the Oxford Dictionary in 2013. In 2015, the Oxford Dictionary named the word emoji 'Word of the Year'. In 2016, the Museum of Modern Art in New York also included the first set of 176 emojis of Shigetaka Kurita in its Permanent Collection.
