How did the yoga day start?
People in many countries around the world practice yoga to stay healthy. But it was India's initiative to start celebrating International Yoga Day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented the idea of celebrating Yoga Day around the world on September 27, 2014 at the United Nations General Assembly. The United Nations General Assembly announced that it would organize an International Yoga Day within three months of the introduction of the resolution.
The General Assembly announced on 11 December 2014 that June 21 would be celebrated as Yoga Day around the world. Since then June 21 has been celebrated as International Yoga Day.
Why is Yoga Day celebrated only on 21st June?
There is a special reason for choosing June 21 as International Yoga Day. In fact this day is the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere, also called the summer solstice. From the point of view of Indian culture, the time of the sun going south after the summer solstice is very beneficial in achieving spiritual achievements. For the same reason, June 21 is celebrated as International Yoga Day.
India's first yoga day world record
June 21, 2015 was the first International Yoga Day. Led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, more than 35,000 people and representatives from 84 countries performed 21 yoga poses on Delhi's Rajpath. The event achieved two Guinness World Records. The first record of 35,985 people doing yoga together and the second record of people from 84 countries participating in the program together.
