Where in India do people choose pets the most?

Labradors and Pomeranians are the favorite pets of Indians. However, love for birds and cats is also on the rise. According to a recent survey, Pet Dogs was the most searched among pets and found 66 per cent demand on the platform. It was followed by birds at 18 per cent and cats at 9 per cent. The demand for rabbits was also 3.5 per cent. Demand for hamsters is also on the rise in the country, a sign of a new trend among pet lovers.

Demand for pets in India has grown at an annual rate of 13%, and demand in Tier-2 cities is slightly higher than in Tier-1 cities. Demand for pet dogs was 50 percent higher in Tier-2 cities compared to Tier-1 cities, while demand for cats was 41 percent higher. However, demand for birds, rabbits and hamsters was similar.

The highest search in the Dog category was for Labrador which accounted for 26% of total searches. The second highest search was 21 percent for Pomeranians, and the third highest was 19 percent for German Shepherds. The popularity of a rare species, such as the Siberian Husky, increased by 36 percent year-on-year. The top 3 cities in the search include Delhi, Hyderabad and Bengaluru where the highest demand for pet dogs was found. Demand remained stable in Delhi and Bengaluru, while Hyderabad grew by 36 per cent year-on-year. The top 5 tier-2 cities with the highest demand for pet dogs include Lucknow, Patna, Visakhapatnam, Bhopal and Indore.

Birdwatchers accounted for about 36 per cent of searches and 17 per cent for parrots in Pet Bird. Among the various species of parrots, cocktail parrots, African gray parrots and macaw parrots were the most sought after. Top 3 Tier-1 cities for Pet Bird saw maximum demand from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Delhi and Mumbai contributed about 50 per cent to the search. The highest demand for Pet Bird from Tier-2 cities was seen in Coimbatore, Jammu, Lucknow, Jaipur and Patna.

The most searched pet pet was for the Persian cat, which accounted for 90 percent of the total searches. However, searches were also conducted for rare species such as Siberian Cat, British Shorthair Cat, Burmese Cat, Abyssinian Cat and Bengal Cat. While the highest demand in the Tier-1 metros for CAT as a pet was found in Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad and the cities with top-5 searches in Tier-2 cities include Srinagar, Coimbatore, Indore, Bhopal and Nashik.

The most searched pet rabbits on the platform include the Holland Lop Rabbit, the California Rabbit, the Netherlands Rabbit, the Dwarf Rabbit and the Flemish Giant Rabbit. Most of the demand from Tier-1 cities was generated from Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad. Lucknow, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Patna and Indore are among the top 5 most generated cities for pet rabbits.

The highest demand for hamsters as a pet was in Delhi, while Mumbai and Chennai were the second and third tier-1 cities in this regard. The top 5 most searched tier-2 cities for hamsters were Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, Goa, Guwahati and Indore. All of this data is based on Just Dial Consumer's latest report.
