New delhi date. 22 December 2020, Tuesday
Many scholars made important contributions to mathematics, including Aryabhata, Mahavira, Brahmagupta, Bhaskar. But apart from these people there was only one Srinivas Ramanujan who showed a clear talent at a very young age. Ramanujan was born in Erode, Tamil Nadu in 1887 and at the age of 12, despite his lack of formal education, excelled in trigonometry and developed several theorems. His contributions to infinite series, angles, mathematical analysis, number theory have always set an example in mathematics. It is for this reason that in his honor we celebrate Mathematics Day every year on December 22 on the Mathematician's birthday.
History of Math Day
In 2012, December 22 was declared National Mathematics Day by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at an event organized in Chennai on the occasion of Ramanuja Jayanti.
Importance of Math Day
The main purpose of celebrating this day is to raise awareness among the people about the importance of mathematics. This day is celebrated to promote a positive attitude towards learning mathematics. These days, training is imparted through camps of mathematicians, teachers and students and the focus is on the development and dissemination of teaching materials for mathematics and research in related fields.
A biopic on the great mathematician was also made. Dev Patel starred in The Man Who New Infinity which was released in the year 2015.
