This was an important point in Indian history, which liberated our country from foreign rule that lasted for centuries. When India gained its independence on 15 August 1947, Goa was under 450 years of Portuguese rule.
History of Goa Liberation Day
Goa Liberation Day is celebrated to celebrate the independence of Goa from the Portuguese. Goa is a state on the south-west coast of India, known as the Konkan. It is located to the north, east and south of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and to the west of the Arabian Sea. Its capital is Panaji. After independence from Portuguese rule, Goa became part of India in 1962 and officially recognized as an independent nation in 1987. The celebration of the liberation of Goa from the Portuguese is celebrated as Goa Liberation Day.
Goa is famous for its beautiful beaches. People from abroad come here to roam. However, for a long time, the Portuguese ruled here and became their colony.
Goa gained independence from Portuguese rule 14 years after India gained independence. Goa was liberated by a joint operation by the Indian Armed Forces. The reason was that the Portuguese were not ready to leave Goa despite repeated warnings. In that, military action had to be taken. The Indian Army then forced the Portuguese to leave Goa on December 19, 1961 under 'Operation Victory'. Goa Liberation Day is celebrated every year in honor of such a historic event.
The first Portuguese invasion of Goa, led by Alfonso-the-Albuquerque, took place in March 1510. This then came under Portuguese rule. He was then attacked by Yusuf Adil Khan of India to drive the Portuguese out of Goa. This frightened the Portuguese and they fled. However, Albuquerque recaptured it later. Napoleon ruled the Portuguese between 1809-1815. Goa remained under British rule till 1947. In this way Goa became the main center of maritime trade of the British.
