Good Governance Day 2020: Why is December 25 celebrated as Good Governance Day?

December 25 marks the anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's Good Governance Day. This day was established in the year 2014 in honor of Shri Vajpayee to raise awareness among the responsible people in the government. Keeping this principle in mind, Good Governance Day has been declared as a working day for the government. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was an Indian politician and writer who served as the 10th Prime Minister of India. Atal Bihari Vajpayee once said, "One day you may be a former Prime Minister but you will never be a former poet."

History of Good Governance Day

On December 23, 2014, it was announced that Shri Vajpayee and Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya (posthumously) would be honored with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award. After announcing this, the Modi government announced that the birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihariji would be observed as Good Governance Day in India every year. However, the decision was criticized by the main opposition party, the Indian National Congress, which had set up Good Governance Day to declare Christmas as a working day for the government.

The purpose of Good Governance Day

The former prime minister is remembered on Good Governance Day

On the occasion of Good Governance Day, people pay homage to Atal Bihari Vajpayee by remembering him. On this day, they are remembered and the work done by them is talked about. Seminars are also organized at different places. Through seminars, people tell about the work done by them from the area. The former prime minister died in 2018.
