International Migrant Day is celebrated on December 18 every year. The purpose of this day is to keep people focused on the fact that treating every migrant with respect is one of the basic requirements. This day aims to raise awareness about the challenges and difficulties facing international tourists.
Who is a migrant?
A citizen is a citizen of any country when he leaves his country in search of work and moves to another country. For example, if an Indian citizen resides in the United States, Saudi Arabia or any other country, he is called a migrant Indian. There are some countries including America, China, Russia, Japan, where a large number of tourists from all over the world live.
History of International Migrant Day
On December 18, 1990, the United Nations General Assembly convened an international conference on the protection of the rights of all migrant workers and their families. On December 4, 2000, the United Nations General Assembly recognized the growing number of tourists in the world and decided to observe December 18 as International Tourist Day. In September 2016, the United Nations General Assembly hosted a high-level summit to address large-scale movements of refugees and tourists. The summit aimed to bring countries together with a more humane and integrated approach.
Some important facts associated with International Tourist Day
- The number of international tourists or people living in any country other than the country of their birth reached 272 million in the year 2019.
- Women make up 48 percent of the total number of tourists.
- An estimated 38 million of them are children.
- Three out of four international tourists are of working age i.e. between 20 and 64 years.
- About 31 per cent of international tourists worldwide are in Asia, 30 per cent in Europe, 26 per cent in the US, 10 per cent in Africa and 3 per cent in Oceania.
