National Farmers' Day is celebrated on December 23 every year on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the fifth Prime Minister of India, Chaudhry Charan Singh, who played a pivotal role in the upliftment of the agricultural sector in his office and drafted a bill for the benefit of many farmers. Although Chaudhry Charan Singh was a very short time Prime Minister, he worked hard for the welfare of Indian farmers. Not only that, he started many schemes for farmers and in the year 2001, the government decided to celebrate the birthday of Chaudhary Charan Singh as a farmer's day.

This day is very important as it gives the idea of empowering the farmers of the society with the new Sikhs in the field of agriculture. The Kisan Diwas program works to educate the people about the various issues facing the farmer. It is said that Chaudhary Charan Singh carried on the legacy of Sir Chhotu Ram and also formed the Kisan Trust on 23 December 1978 to spread awareness about the issues of farmers in the country.
