International Tea Day is celebrated around the world on 15th December every year by different tea producing countries. Tea is the main source of livelihood for millions of families in producing and developing countries and the main source of livelihood for millions of poor families who live at least in developed countries. The tea industry is a major source of income and export revenue for some poor countries and provides employment in the labor sector, especially in remote and economically deprived areas. Not only that, tea can play an important role in rural development, poverty reduction and food security in developing countries, one of the most important cash crops.

Tea has been a valuable economic commodity throughout history. The goal of the day is to promote excellent trade practices and working conditions as well as focus on ethical and sustainable production of tea. The day is also aimed at raising awareness about fighting hunger and poverty. The development of tea requires special care and effort.
History of International Tea Day
This day is celebrated every year to attract the attention of the people and the government. However, on India's recommendation, the United Nations has declared May 21 as International Tea Day. The proposal was made by India at a meeting of the Government Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Milan four years ago. The United Nations General Assembly has recognized the medicinal properties of tea as well as its cultural significance. International Tea Day started on December 15, 2005 in New Delhi but a year later it was celebrated in Sri Lanka and from there it started being celebrated all over the world.
