The United Nations declared World Peace Day in 1981 to ensure peace among all nations and peoples of the world. This is why World Peace Day was first observed in 1982. From 1982 to 2001, the third Tuesday in September was celebrated as World Peace Day. But since 2002, World Peace Day has been observed on September 21.

International Peace Day begins with the ringing of the United Nations Peace Bell at the United Nations Headquarters, New York.
