Find out why International Day of Innocent Children is being celebrated as a victim of aggression.

New delhi date. 04 June 2021, Friday

There are many things that happen around us but we are still unaware of certain things. From a small point of view, any problem or difficulty can sometimes take a big form. Even with children, such incidents sometimes happen unknowingly and sometimes knowingly, which affects them physically, mentally and emotionally. In view of these sufferings, June 4 of each year is celebrated as the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression. The purpose behind celebrating this day is to raise awareness about children who are victims, victims of physical, mental and emotional abuse.

The reason behind celebrating this day

On August 19, 1982, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 4 of each year as the International Day of the Victims of Innocent Children. The day began on August 19, 1982, when Palestinian and Lebanese children became victims of Israeli violence, prompting Palestinians to call on the United Nations to take action. In view of this violence, the UN General Assembly decided to celebrate June 4 as the International Day of Innocent Children of Aggression. The purpose of the day is to reaffirm the United Nations' commitment to protecting the victims of sexual violence, abduction and their rights. This was a major effort to improve the safety of children in conflict situations.

Strict rules must be enforced to protect children from all forms of violence

In 1997, the General Assembly adopted Resolution 51/77 on child rights. These include the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its Alternative Protocols and the Annual Rights of the Child Resolutions. Violence against children has increased in recent years in many conflict areas. More needs to be done to protect the 250 million children living in the conflict-affected country and region. More efforts should be made to promote international humanitarian and human rights law, to ensure accountability for violations of children's rights, and to protect children from violence.

Violence against children

- Affects over 1 billion children worldwide

- 50% of the world's children experience violence every year.

- Every 5 minutes a child dies due to violence somewhere in the world.

- One in 10 children is sexually abused before the age of 18.

- Any child can be a victim of online violence.

- 246 million children worldwide are victims of school-related violence each year.

- One in three students is bullied by their peers and at least 1 in ten children are victims of cyberbullying. (According to a United Nations 2019 report)

- 9 out of 10 children live in countries where corporal punishment is not strictly prohibited, 732 million children have been left without legal protection.

Rules for child protection in India

In India too, a number of legal changes have been made in the last few years to prevent child violence. Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act - Poxo Act has been implemented. There are different punishment provisions for different offenses under this Act. In addition, the Central and State Governments have been asked to prepare educational materials and curricula for children under the Child Sexual Offenses Protection Rules, 2020 Awareness and Capacity Building. The Child Sexual Offenses Protection Act also defines sexual violence against children. In this type of incident, the children have been given the necessary assistance at every level. The provisions associated with child pornography have also been tightened.

2030 Agenda of the United Nations General Assembly

The international community has launched a historic plan of 17 Sustainable Development Goals through the United Nations aimed at building a more prosperous, more egalitarian and more protected world by the year 2030. The new agenda includes, for the first time, a specific goal to end all forms of violence against children, and several other violence-related goals to end child abuse, neglect and exploitation.
