Fifteen countries around the world, including India, celebrate Martyrs' Day to honor their Freedom Fighters. And Martyrs' Day in India is celebrated every year on January 30 and March 23 to pay tribute to the victims who fought for India's independence, pride, welfare and progress.
Why is Martyr's Day celebrated on January 30?
Mahatma Gandhi, the most famous figure in the history of India's freedom struggle, was assassinated by Nathuram Godse at Birla House during evening prayers on January 30, 1948. He was 78 at the time. This day is celebrated as Martyr's Day. Gandhiji was a supporter of making India a secular and a non-violent nation, for which he had to struggle a lot. March 23 is also celebrated as Martyr's Day as Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged on that day.
Why is Martyr's Day celebrated?
As Martyr's Day Mahatma Gandhi's Samadhi, the President, Vice President, Prime Minister and Defense Minister of India come together at Rajghat and pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi and remember his contribution during the freedom struggle. Salutes the martyrs of the Armed Forces of the country. Gathering, people observe a 2-minute silence in memory of Bapu and other martyrs of the country.
